Madhavan, a disciple of Sangitha Kalanidhi D.K.Jayaraman is the grandson of violinist R.S.Gopalakrishnan. He assimilated his guru DKJ’s music by learning numerous Krithis and accompanying him in concerts while playing the thambura.
After the demise of DKJ, Madhavan came under the tutelage of Shri P.S.Narayanaswamy and N.Vijay Siva for advanced training.

• Music Academy’s “Ambujam Krishna Award” and Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar scholarship for advanced training under P.S.N in 1997.
• Krishna Gana Sabha’s Chembai Memorial Prize for the best vocalist in 1994.
• Currently a B high artist, Madhavan won the first prize in AIR’s All India Classical Music open competition 1993 and was given a B grade by AIR without audition.

• Madhavan was running a 24-hour Carnatic Music radio channel ‘Shruti’ for World Space.
